#100WCGU #157 – freedom

The prompt for this week’s 100 Word Challenge is ‘…at last we were free…’

Those last days seemed to stretch on for ever. End of term exams were done and the weather was too hot to be stuck in a classroom for much longer. The last week was predictable with leavers assemblies, concerts and, finally, prizegiving.

Prizegiving was a stuffy affair, with the teachers in their robes and the governors on the stage. The same few students winning prizes each year and a rousing rendition of the school song, old boys in the audience included.

Then, the final bell. At last we were free. We dawdled to the bus, saying goodbye for six weeks, dreading the loneliness of the break.
